THE best 6 THINGS TO DO IN LAKE BLED
Bled is the perfect destination for your next relaxing getaway. Whether you feel like sunbathing by the water or filling your days with adventure, Lake Bled has you covered. Slovenia is one of the most underrated travel destinations and Lake Bled is the best that Slovenia has to offer. This article details the very best 6 things to do on your trip.
1. Rent a rowboat and visit Bled Island
Your trip to Bled is not complete without renting a rowboat to explore Bled Island. Save this activity for a sunny day and approach one of the many rental companies around the lake. All these rental companies will charge roughly the same price for an hour, which is probably all the time you will need to get to the island and back. It will take you about five minutes to humbly learn to row but after that, the journey to visit the famed Church of the Assumption of Maria is fairly short. The views from Bled Island are breathtaking, watching the sun sparkle on the impossibly green lake fed by the Julian Alps altered my brain chemistry.
2. Climb Ojstrica mala for panoramic views
An unbeatable viewpoint is from the mountain of Ojstrica. The hike up to the viewpoint is located on the western side of the lake, closest to Bled Island. The hike takes approximately one hour return, and the route is short however the climb can be steep and challenging so pack water and other necessary provisions. Please keep advised this hike is not recommended in winter due to the dangerous ice underfoot. Follow the signs up the trail and be rewarded with one of the most awe-inspiring panoramic views in Europe.
3. Hike Through the Vintgar Gorge
You can either arrange a charter service with a local travel company or complete the pleasant 1-hour walk to reach the Vintgar Gorge from Bled. The gorge is a part of Triglav National Park, the 1.6km gorge has been carved by the crystal clear Radovna River. Walk along the gorge and discover the multiple cascading rapids, waterfalls, and pools which end at the impressive 13m Sum River Waterfall and gateway into Triglav National Park.
4. VISIT BLED CASTLE
Bled Castle is the oldest Slovenian castle, originating in the Medieval period and sitting 130m above Lake Bled. The castle was built for defensive purposes by a German king in 1011 AD and rebuilt in 1511 after a devastating earthquake. As well as being a picturesque castle that offers insane views of the surrounding area, Bled Castle contains a museum where you can learn about the history of the Bled region.
5. DAY TRIP TO LAKE BOHINJ
Just half an hour away from Lake Bled is the equally impressive, and way less known, Lake Bohinj. Like Lake Bled, Bohinj is a glacially formed basin with numerous towns surrounding the lake and various water sports to partake in. Bohinj is backdropped by the glorious Julian Alps that roll down to the pebbly beaches. The walk around the lake is 12km and takes about 3 hours depending on how often you stop to gaze over the glorious viewpoints or to wander through the towns of Ukanc or Ribcev Laz.
6. GO TOBOGGANING AT STRAZA
A perfect activity to bring out your inner child is to head up to Straza for some tobogganing. The hill is located directly west of Bled and only takes 15 minutes to reach by foot. The summer sledding track is so much fun for adventurers, families, and adrenaline junkies. Not only can you whizz down the side of the hill at jarring speed, but the top of the hill is also considered the best viewpoint in the whole of Bled!
